The show notes

In business, it is always about adding more revenue and profit to the business. The MICE industry is no exception.

But in addition to thinking about profit, we need to keep an extra high focus on the people, the value and experience they get from being our clients.

The One Hour Teambuilding is a product I, Thomas Danielsen, your host and co-owner of DMC Baltic, developed several years ago to break up “boring” meetings.

Sitting 8-10 hours in a meeting room is heavy. No doubt about it. Breaks or not, it is still heavy.

One day I decided to try to make meetings more fun and reinvigorate the meeting participants.

The one-hour teambuilding was born.

The side benefit, I discovered, was that by owning my own set of activities which I did not need to buy from an external supplier, actually make me more money.

Instead of getting a 10-15% commission, I could not make the full profit myself and make 3-4 times more money, and at the same time delivering value and a great experience to the client.

Happy client, happy Thomas, happy accountant. A win-win-win!

In the podcast, I explain the concept, but to give you the bullet-points of The One Hour Teambuilding.

Here is how it works:

I have 4 stations scattered around the hotel. The group is divided into 4 groups (or more/less as needed).

The 4 stations typically are:

  1. The Magic Puzzle. The 4-piece puzzle that makes engineers cry.
  2. Paper towel pull. Pull out all the paper of a paper towel as fast as possible.
  3. Be creative, take a picture. 3 tasks the group need to do and take pictures of, such as a) One or more team members upside-down. b) Two or more team members on top of each other. c) How crazy/silly can you possibly take a photo of the group?
  4. Tasting station tailored around where you are, or a certain topic. When we do these in Riga, we typically have Riga Balsam tasting or similar.

Don’t forget a prize for the winning team. I usually give gold medals for the winners only.

I typically charge between €20-40 per delegate for this activity, but it obviously depends on what is included, etc.

And that’s it.

The reason why this is so good, is that it is an easy upsell! It is not crazy expensive, and since most clients know from experience that a full day in a meeting room can be a challenge, they are likely to buy something that can battle this issue.

Breaking it up a full day of meetings with some fun is a great way to infuse new energy and life into a meeting.

And lest not forget, this is also a great “break the ice” activity if many of the people in the meeting are from different locations/offices and do not really know each other that well.
